GE washer clothing guard....

This has been a common question - my clothing guard and wire from under the lid fell off, how do you put them back on??

Push in on the spring clips securing the front of the cover, then raise the cover. Recommended tools for releasing the cover spring clips are a wooden or plastic wedge, or a one inch putty knife. The cover may be damaged/chipped if a large flat screwdriver is used.

The plastic cover shield/guard is attached to the flange on the underside of the cover/top panel. A rigid plastic retainer, supports and correctly shapes the shield at the rear of the loading hole. Both the shield and retainer are fastened to the cover by a wire loop.

The suggested procedure for repairing a cover shield which has fallen off is as follows...

1) Open the cover and lay it back against a wall or on it's hinges.

2) Position the vinyl shield and wire retainer back on the cover. The wire twist should be in the 6:00 o'clock position, facing the underside of the cover from the front of the washer.

3) Using vise-grip pliers, grasp wire twist at the end of the first full twist, as shown below.

4) Make one complete turn ( 360º) with the pliers.

5) Check for proper tightness by rolling the lip of the cover shield over the flange, as if to pull the shield off from the top cover. If the shield pulls off, re-tighten in 1/2 ( 180º) increments until it stays in place. Over-tightening will break the wire, it is difficult to judge by feel when the wire is tight.
