Gas Range Purchase....

Gas Range:

Gas ranges come normally with no connectors for the gas line, they must be installed when the gas line is installed or if you are using an existing gas line, they can be transferred from the old range providing they are as good as new. A new flex line is now always required to make the install a safe one. Gas ranges still need power to operate the electronic igniters and clock. A 120 volt outlet must be in the area of the new range. This 120 volt outlet is like every other regular plug outlet in your home, it must be a three prong outlet. Before shopping for a new gas range, have a look behind the range to see if a -inline regulator- is present ( some will be big and some may be small ). It will look like a pancake with a cone sticking out of it. This is more common on older installations ( over 15 years old ), this regulator will have to be removed as the new ranges have them built in and the range will not function properly with two of them in series. Most, if not all modern gas ranges can be converted from natural gas to propane and back again as required ( best to have a qualified service tech do this type of conversion ).

Gas Range Piping:

There are many regulation codes that must be followed when you purchase a gas range, the dealer should be able to help with installation questions and codes. Just because the house has gas in it or the pipe runs under where you want the gas range does not mean that it is easy to install a gas range or does it mean you can use the pipe that is right around the gas range. Most often an existing pipe is supplying a certain product with gas and you cannot just "tap" into that pipe...almost 100% of the time, it is incapable of supplying both products with gas. A new line must be installed from the main, all the way to the new range. This is a added cost to the purchase....common prices to do this is 150-200 dollars, depending on the install. Finished basements, split-level homes, stair ways, can all be an added cost to the install.

Some gas range features:

Some gas range features that you may want to consider. Sealed surface burners or open surface burners. Sealed burners mean the cook top cannot be lifted up and any spills will be contained on the cooktop, the sealed burners are often screwed or secured to the cook top in some fashion. The open burner cooktop can be lifted off and any spills can run under the cooktop to the burner box area. 180 degree surface control VS. 90 degree surface control. The 180 degree controls offer more range in the flame control area. Gas ranges also come self clean or manual clean. Manual clean ranges usually have the broil in the lower drawer area while self clean ranges offer the a waist high broil inside the oven cavity. Electronic controlled oven or manual dial oven controls are offered on gas ranges as well. There are not very many convection gas ranges on the market, but there some being offered from Maytag and Jenn-air.
